Guadalupe County adds $80,000 to district court appointed-attorney budget

The county added $80,000 to its FY2027 budget for attorneys appointed in Combined District Court. The larger allocation does not establish what taxpayers ultimately paid or how many people received counsel.

Guadalupe County's FY2027 budget sets aside $1.58 million for Combined District Court appointed attorneys, $80,000 more than FY2026. That is an appropriation, not a record of checks paid.

The FY2026 General Fund budget listed $1.5 million for Court Appointed Attorney account 520.4006 in the Combined District Court. Comparing that same account across years keeps the separate juvenile appointed-attorney account out of the calculation.

For people receiving appointed counsel in Combined District Court, the county has budgeted more money for the account labeled Court Appointed Attorney. Whether that becomes more payments to lawyers, more appointments or a change in service is a different question.

The $80,000 change

The FY2027 General Fund budget lists $1.58 million for the same account. Guadalupe.News compared the two official workbook rows: the increase is $80,000, or about 5.3% of the FY2026 amount. These are annual budget figures, not per-person costs or a change to any household tax bill.

Commissioners voted 5-0 on Sept. 1 to adopt the FY2027 budget. The adopted appropriation is the county's plan for this account. It does not, by itself, tell a taxpayer the amount that will eventually leave the treasury or tell a person assigned counsel how quickly an attorney will be available.

What to check next

The FY2027 adopted budget provides the appropriation; the auditor's disbursement ledger would show how much was actually paid. Court appointment reports would supply another essential denominator: the number of appointments. Without putting those records beside the budget, dividing $1.58 million by an assumed caseload would produce a number with no reliable meaning.

The number to watch is the amount actually paid from account 520.4006 during FY2027. Readers can inspect the county's budget workbooks through the Auditor's budget page; the next public-record comparison should pair that account's ledger with district court appointment counts for the same period.
