Children in kindergarten through fourth grade who live in Schertz or attend Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD schools may submit one fire-safety poster to their school's main office by Oct. 29, according to the Schertz Fire Department.

Eligible Schertz-area families have six days from Oct. 23 to prepare and turn in a poster that follows the department's theme and size rules.

The Schertz Fire Department's posted rules specify the poster material, size and artwork requirements.

The required theme is “Charge into Fire Safety,” which the city says focuses on safe handling and disposal of lithium-ion batteries. Posters must use white cardstock measuring at least 11 by 14 inches and no more than 22 by 28 inches, and the artwork must be original. Students may also include other fire-safety topics.

Each student may submit one poster. The student's first and last name, grade, school and teacher's name must be written on the back for judging. The rules prohibit live matches on posters.

The department says it will collect posters from participating schools Nov. 2. It plans to announce winners at the Nov. 17 Schertz City Council meeting and award trophies to the top three entries in each grade. Submitted posters become department property and may be displayed publicly; the city says students' personal information will not be shared.

Families can check the city's contest notice for the full rules before submitting. The notice also lists the Schertz Fire Department's information number, (210) 619-1300.
