Guadalupe County budgets more for fire and sheriff operations while its adopted rate adds about $16.60 in maintenance-and-operations tax to its $100,000 home example. The puzzle is what residents will see from that spending.

The adopted FY27 budget sets the 2026 total county rate at $0.3493 per $100 of taxable value: $0.2752 for maintenance and operations, $0.0212 for debt and $0.0529 for lateral roads. The county’s tax notice gives the $16.60 illustration for maintenance and operations, one part of the county rate.

Last year’s county total tax rate was $0.3304 per $100 of taxable value. Commissioners voted 5-0 on Sept. 1 to adopt the FY27 budget and separately voted 5-0 on the 2026 tax rate.

What it costs

The county’s FY27 budget projects $3,739,540 more property-tax revenue than the prior budget, including $3,018,691 from new property. Those are countywide revenue projections. The $16.60 figure is the county’s example for one home value and one portion of its tax rate, not a calculation for every parcel.

Where the budget puts money

A Guadalupe.News comparison of county budget lines puts fire departments at $5,256,133 in FY26 adopted spending and $5,923,581 in FY27. The sheriff’s department goes from $23,715,526 to $26,257,536 in the same comparison. Look at the second column for the baseline: these are whole department budgets, not amounts assigned to one homeowner’s rate change.

The FY27 budget lists three new firefighter positions and three new patrol-deputy positions. Budgeted positions are a concrete spending commitment; staffing and service records will show what follows. The budget’s staffing summaries also differ: one lists 16 new full-time positions, while another lists 14 full-time and one part-time. A reconciled staffing roster would clarify the countywide count.

What happens next

The county tax assessor says 2026 tax statements will be available after the November elections because multiple tax-rate elections affect the bills. Readers can check the county’s tax-assessor page for the issued statements, then compare the budgeted positions with later staffing and service reports. The adopted budget provides the spending baseline for that check.
