What would Guadalupe County’s $195,882 fire-engine shift change?

County taxpayers could see $195,882 shifted toward a fire engine if the court approves the amendment; the total budget for the two vehicles would stay the same.

Guadalupe County could put $195,882 more toward a fire engine without adding a dollar to its two-vehicle budget.

Here is how the math works. Budget amendment 27-9 would move money from the squad tender/truck line to the engine line. The Commissioners Court has scheduled the proposal for Oct. 27; these figures describe an allocation, not an approved purchase.

Budget amendment 27-9 would redistribute $1.5 million between two fire-vehicle lines.Guadalupe County Tax Notes Fund 701, FY2027

For county residents, the proposal changes how existing tax-note budget authority is divided between two fire vehicles. The practical question is what the county eventually buys with each line and where those vehicles serve.

What it costs

Before the amendment, the fire-engine line stands at $1,000,000 and the squad tender/truck line at $500,000. The proposed figures are $1,195,882 and $304,118, respectively. Add either pair and the total is $1.5 million. The smaller vehicle line would have less room than before.

Who pays and who benefits

Both lines sit in Tax Notes Fund 701. A transfer between them tells taxpayers which purchase has more room in the capital budget; by itself, it does not calculate anyone’s tax bill. A household estimate would require the debt-payment schedule, the tax base and the rate used to collect those payments.

What has to go right

The court’s Oct. 27 agenda also lists a separate fire-engine proposal under item 8B; the budget amendment is item 8Q. Those are separate decisions. Approval of a budget line would leave the purchase price, signed terms and eventual deployment to be checked against procurement and service records. A larger engine allowance is paired with a smaller squad tender/truck allowance.

What the budget cannot answer

Money moved on a page does not tell a neighborhood which apparatus will arrive or when. The operational test is the final vehicle specification, the signed order and the county’s deployment plan. Those records would connect this allocation choice to the service residents actually receive, without treating a proposed budget entry as a response-time improvement.

The Commissioners Court is scheduled to consider budget amendment 27-9 on Oct. 27. Readers can inspect the two proposed line changes in the county’s amendment and then check the court’s posted outcome for items 8Q and 8B before treating either proposal as approved.
