The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles says new Texas residents have 30 days after moving to register a vehicle.

Its new-resident instructions say to take proof of insurance and proof of ownership, such as an out-of-state registration or title, to a county tax office. The first registration must be done in person.

TxDMV’s new-resident guidance gives the registration deadline and the steps for a first Texas registration.

Guadalupe County residents can make their first Texas registration at the county tax offices in Seguin or Schertz, both open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday except holidays. The county requires valid photo ID for every vehicle registration transaction. Bring it along with the vehicle documents before joining the line.

What to bring

TxDMV says a first-time registrant must complete Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, Form 130-U. Bring an insurance card and proof that you own the vehicle; the agency gives an out-of-state registration or title as examples of ownership proof. Guadalupe County separately requires a valid photo ID. These are the documents identified on the state and county pages, so check the state instructions and the county office page before your visit.

TxDMV says a new resident is not required to obtain a Texas title merely to register the vehicle. The county does process title transactions, but it says no vehicle titles will be processed after 4 p.m., even though its offices remain open until 4:30 p.m. If you plan to handle a title transaction as well as registration, allow for that earlier cutoff.

The 30-day deadline and Form 130-U requirement come from TxDMV; the ID rule and title cutoff come from Guadalupe County.

Inspection and later renewals

TxDMV lists the counties where an emissions inspection is required before registration; Guadalupe County is not on that list. The agency gives a separate rule for commercial vehicles: they must pass a safety inspection before registration renewal. Residents with commercial vehicles should use that rule when planning a later renewal, rather than treating the instructions for an ordinary noncommercial vehicle as sufficient.

A renewal is different from a first Texas registration. Guadalupe County says renewals are available through TxDMV online and at H-E-B locations in Seguin and Schertz. For an H-E-B renewal, the county says to bring the green renewal notice. A newcomer making a first Texas registration should instead use one of the county tax offices identified above.

Where to go

The Seguin tax office is at 307 W. Court Street, Seguin, TX 78155; its phone number is (830) 379-2315. The Schertz substation is at 1052 FM 78, Suite 107, Schertz, TX 78154; its phone number is (210) 945-9708. Both list weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except holidays. The county’s tax office page provides the addresses and contact details to check before traveling. Ask the office to calculate the total charge for your particular vehicle and transaction.
